A Taste of Turkey in Thailand

Today Taste of Thailand will be discussing the Thai version of the Turkish Doner Kebab. Turkish Kebab originated in Turkey (referred to as Kebab in Thailand) has taken its place in Thailand’s street food culture. This handheld dish is filled with hot seasoned meat shaved from a vertical rotisserie – a style of cooking that can be traced back to the Ottoman empire. Kebab has taken its place as one of the most popular fast foods in Thailand. Thais and tourists alike can be found ordering a Kebab wherever you find a vendor.

Chicken Kebab

The preparation of a Kebab stays true to the original where big chunks of meat are shaved off a spinning rotisserie. The Kebab vendor fills a flatbread with the meat of your choice generally beef, chicken, or lamb. Next, they add some chopped onions, tomato, lettuce and top it off with sauce. Once all the ingredients are inside the flatbread it is rolled up in foil paper to keep warm. The Kebab while tasting its freshest right when you get it so dig in!

The average price for a chicken shawarma will set you back about $2 USD or 60 THB, and beef and lamb will be slightly more expensive and vary depending on the location and the vendor. You can find many stalls around Bangkok and many other cities throughout Thailand. If you find yourself in downtown Bangkok, many vendors during the day are located in the Nana neighborhood. (If you go here after dark it turns into a popular area for entertainment).
